A public university for social change

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, the first school of social work in Asia. It was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1944 and became a Deemed University under the UGC Act in 1964. Today TISS works across four campuses — Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati — through schools, independent centres and field action projects that combine teaching, research and direct engagement with communities.
